With the defeat of the Sydney Test, Team India's dominance over the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the last 7 years also ended. Australia won the series 3-1 along with the trophy and also made it to the final of the World Test Championship. This defeat has put the entire Indian team under the scanner, with most eyes focused on captain Rohit Sharma and former captain Virat Kohli. The performance of both was poor in the entire series and now everyone wants to know whether their journey in the Test team is over? Coach Gautam Gambhir did not give a direct answer to this question but made it clear through gestures that the team can do without him in the future.
Sunday, January 5, was only the third day of the Sydney Test and the match was over before the end of the day. With this, the 5 test match series which started from 22nd November also ended, which went in favor of Australia after 10 years. In this series for Team India, most of the players failed to perform as per expectations but the most shocking performance was of captain Rohit and Virat. Rohit scored only 31 runs in 5 innings, while Virat could score only 190 runs in 9 innings.
Since this performance, there has been a demand to drop both of them from the Test team forever. Rohit had dropped himself from the Sydney Test but Virat kept playing and failed. In such a situation, after the end of the Sydney Test, when coach Gambhir was asked in the press conference about the future of the greats, Gambhir did not make any announcement but did say that there is still hunger within the players. The Indian head coach said, “I cannot say anything about the future of any player. It depends on them. All I can say is that people are still hungry, there is still passion and these are tough guys.”
What does the future look like for senior players in the team? High Coach @GautamGambhir responds!

But Gambhir also made it clear that it is important to keep the interests of the team in mind. He said, “Hopefully he will keep taking Team India forward but whatever plan he makes in the end, hopefully it will be in the interest of Team India.” That is, Gambhir directly put the ball in the court of both the superstar players that they should take a decision in the interest of the team. There is also an indication in this that if the players want an honorable farewell then they should decide to opt out themselves, otherwise they can also be dropped. Team India now has to tour England directly in June, where 5 test matches will be played.
