After this, India suffered a 3–0 series defeat against New Zealand at home, which happened for the first time in the history of Indian cricket. This was after 12 years when India lost a Test series at home.

After this there was pressure to win 4 out of 5 matches against Australia. India started with a spectacular win under the leadership of Jasprit Bumrah in Perth. However, India's campaign faltered due to defeats in the Adelaide and Melbourne Tests. The Brisbane Test was drawn due to rain and the series went to Australia 3-1.
