Scott Boland delivered a masterclass in pace bowling on Day 3 of the fifth Test in Sydney, dismantling India's batting lineup with figures of 6/45. His heroics ensured that India, despite a promising start by their openers, crumbled to 157 all out in their second innings.
With a target of just 162 runs, Australia appears to be in the driver's seat as they chase victory in the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Boland's scalps included top-order stalwarts like Yashasvi Jaiswal (22), KL Rahul (13), and Virat Kohli (6).
His dismissal of Kohli, caught by Steve Smith at second slip, marked the third time he has claimed the former Indian captain in four innings this series. Boland's consistency and accuracy have been key for Australia, earning him comparisons to Stuart MacGill for his ability to shine despite limited opportunities.
Resuming at 141/6, India's hopes rested on Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. However, both fell quickly to Pat Cummins in the morning session. Jadeja, dismissed for 13, edged a fuller delivery to Alex Carey, while Sundar added just six runs.
Boland then cleaned up the tail, dismissing Mohammed Siraj (4) and Jasprit Bumrah (0), securing his second six-wicket haul in Test cricket. India's total of 157 means they have set Australia a target of 162 runs, a figure unlikely to trouble the hosts given their aggressive start to the chase.
Scott Boland: A Rising Star
Former Australian pacer Brett Lee lauded Boland's remarkable performances. "He is a freak. His consistency and temperament make him exceptional," Lee said, calling Boland "Mr. Consistent."
With 19 wickets at an average of 14.42 in the series, Boland has been instrumental for Australia, particularly at home, where his numbers are stunning-47 wickets in just nine Tests at an average of 13.10.
India faces an uphill battle with their premier bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, out injured. The onus now lies on Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja to defend the modest target. Australia have now begun their chase rather aggressively.
