The much-anticipated question of Jasprit Bumrah's availability has been answered, and it's bad news for Team India. Australia began their chase of 162 to win the decisive fifth Test and reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
However, Bumrah was nowhere to be seen on the field. This development leaves India without their premier fast bowler at a critical juncture. Bumrah, who has been battling back spasms, had earlier come out to bat at No. 10, showing signs of discomfort.
However, as Australia's openers walked in to begin their chase, it became evident that India would be without their strike bowler. The series' leading wicket-taker with 32 scalps at an average of 13.06, Bumrah has been a key figure in India's campaign.
His unavailability puts the pressure squarely on Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and the spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar to deliver on a surface offering assistance to bowlers.
Australia's openers are starting cautiously but looking confident as they face an Indian attack missing its spearhead. The pitch at the Sydney Cricket Ground, which has been bowler-friendly throughout the match, still has some bite, but the absence of Bumrah diminishes India's chances of capitalizing on the conditions.
Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar, speaking to India Today, had earlier emphasized the importance of Bumrah for India's chances. "Without Jasprit Bumrah, it's going to be very difficult for India to win the Test match. You need him for those crucial breakthroughs," Gavaskar had said.
Prasidh Krishna, who took three wickets in the first innings, will now need to replicate his efforts and combine effectively with Siraj. Ravindra Jadeja, who has been in good form with the ball, also has a massive role to play.
With only a 161-run cushion and a weakened bowling lineup, India faces an uphill battle to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Australia, seeking their first series win in a decade, will look to capitalize on this golden opportunity. The question now is whether India can muster a herculean effort or if Australia will script a historic win.
