MS Dhoni, the face of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) since the IPL's inception, has admitted he is not at peak fitness ahead of IPL 2025. Despite being 43 years old, Dhoni continues to be a pivotal part of the franchise, retained for ₹4 crore.
"I am not fit as I used to be and the efforts are needed to play in the IPL," the former IPL-winning captain told media ahead of the upcoming season.
Dhoni, known for his finishing prowess, played as a specialist batter in IPL 2024, contributing with a staggering strike rate of 220.54 in limited appearances. However, MSD's candid remarks about his fitness have sparked speculation about CSK's plans for their lower-middle order, particularly the crucial No. 7 spot he often occupies.
In the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah, the franchise has bolstered its roster with players who can step into Dhoni's shoes if required. Here, we explore three potential candidates for the No. 7 role in IPL 2025.
1. Ravindra Jadeja
Ravindra Jadeja's ability to anchor and finish innings makes him a strong candidate for the No. 7 spot. Jadeja has been a consistent performer for CSK, providing crucial runs in the lower-middle order and delivering under pressure.
In IPL 2024, he scored 267 runs at an impressive average of 44.50 and a strike rate of 142.78. With one half-century and 22 boundaries to his name, Jadeja showcased his adaptability in critical situations. Over the years, Jadeja has transitioned into a dependable finisher, complementing his exceptional bowling and fielding abilities.
Jadeja's versatility also allows him to handle the demands of No. 7 while offering flexibility to CSK's batting lineup. His vast experience in high-pressure games makes him the ideal candidate to step up if Dhoni decides to take a backseat.
2. Deepak Hooda
Deepak Hooda, acquired for ₹1.7 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction, is a compelling alternative. Known for his aggressive stroke play and handy off-spin, Hooda brings a two-dimensional edge to CSK.
Hooda's IPL 2024 numbers, though modest with 145 runs at a strike rate of 138.10, highlight his ability to accelerate when required. His best IPL season came in 2022, where he amassed 451 runs at an average of 32.21. This suggests Hooda can adapt to different roles, whether anchoring or finishing.
Internationally, Hooda has shown promise in T20Is, scoring 368 runs in 17 innings at a strike rate of 147.2, including a century. His versatility as a batter and part-time spinner makes him a valuable asset for CSK in scenarios demanding quick runs or additional bowling options.
3. Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravichandran Ashwin's experience and cricketing acumen make him a wildcard for the No. 7 position. Although primarily a bowling all-rounder, Ashwin has demonstrated his batting capabilities in recent IPL seasons.
In IPL 2024, Ashwin scored 86 runs at a strike rate of 116.22, often playing crucial cameos. His career-best IPL season in 2022 saw him score 191 runs at an average of 27.29, including a half-century. Ashwin's ability to rotate the strike and hit big in the death overs provides CSK with a strategic edge.
Ashwin's inclusion in the No. 7 discussion also stems from his suitability to Chepauk's spin-friendly conditions. His all-round contributions can offer CSK the balance they need if Dhoni takes on a limited role.
