The result of Melbourne Test has not been in favor of Team India. Australia has won this by 184 runs. With this big win, he has also taken the lead in the series. Australia had set a target of 340 runs for India to win in the Melbourne Test, chasing which Team India's second innings was limited to 155 runs only. This is the 49th time in Test cricket that Team India has faced defeat while chasing a total of 300 plus.
Australia, which took a lead of 333 runs after losing 9 wickets on the fourth day, added 6 more runs to its score on the 5th day and gave India a target of 340 runs. Overcoming this target would have been like creating history for Team India at MCG because till now the most successful run chase on this ground was 332 runs. But, this could not happen.
Team India's second innings in the Melbourne Test was limited to just 155 runs. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal scored the maximum 84 runs for the Indian team. He scored these runs facing 208 balls. Apart from Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant was the second top scorer of the team, who played an inning of 30 runs while chasing the target of 340 runs.
Except Yashasvi and Pant, no other batsman could cross the double figures, which was a major reason why Team India could neither win nor draw the Melbourne Test. Rohit Sharma scored 9 runs and Virat Kohli scored 5 runs. Seeing KL Rahul failing for the second consecutive innings, it seems as if the decision of the Indian team management to play him at number 3 was wrong.
Playing first in the Melbourne Test, Australia scored 474 runs in the first innings. In reply, India had scored 369 runs in the first innings. Playing with a lead of 105 runs in the first innings, Australia scored 234 runs in the second innings. Jasprit Bumrah took the maximum 9 wickets for India in the Melbourne Test. Whereas for Australia, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon took 6-6 wickets. Pat Cummins was chosen player of the match.
