Former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist believes Rishabh Pant should have been fined for his animated argument with the umpire on April 12 during Delhi Capitals’ match against Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2024.

After apparent miscommunication over a DRS review, the DC skipper engaged in a prolonged, heated discussion with umpire Rohan Pandit. Despite Delhi’s 6-wicket win over LSG for their second victory of IPL 2024, the match brought more criticism of Pant’s captaincy decision-making. During the 4th over of the match between DC and LSG, DC bowler Ishant Sharma delivered a wide down the leg side to LSG batter Devdutt Padikkal. Initially, DC captain Rishabh Pant contested the wide call.

Umpire Nitin Pandit then signaled to review the decision per Pant’s request. However, as the third umpire reviewed the replay, a frustrated Pant argued with Pandit about calling for the review. This halted play temporarily before the replay confirmed Pandit’s wide call was correct, clarifying that Pant had requested the review.

In an interview with Cricbuzz, Adam Gilchrist disapproved of Pant’s reaction and called for umpires to have better control over IPL 2024 games.

“Tonight, I saw another case of umpires needing to assert control of games. They must do a better job of moving things along. There was confusion over whether Rishabh had called for a review. Miscommunication occurred regarding the review.” said Gilchrist.

“The umpires discussed the issue with the players for 3-4 minutes despite it being simple. Regardless of the extent of Rishabh’s or any player’s complaints, the umpires should swiftly end the conversation by stating, “It’s over,” and moving on. If a player persists in arguing, they should receive a fine.” concluded the former Aussie wicketkeeper.

Despite early match confusion, Pant led his team effectively. The southpaw’s quick 41 off 24 balls helped DC chase 168 to defeat LSG and regain momentum. This win should boost Delhi’s confidence before their big clash with GT on April 17.
