New Delhi: Delhi Capitals may have won the game against Lucknow Super Giants on Friday but former Australia wicketkeeper felt captain Rishabh Pant should have been penalized for his on-field behaviours with the umpire at the Ekana Stadium during their IPL 2024 encounter. Gilchrist was referring to Pant’s extended conversations with the umpire over a wide ball during the fourth over of the match. However, television replays later confirmed it was indeed a wide ball.

Gilchrist, a stalwart in Australian cricket, emphasized on umpires taking control of the game and advocated for easy resolutions to prevent disruptions to the game. “I saw another example tonight where umpires need to take better control of games, and that is in any format. They just got to do a better job at moving things forward,” Gilchrist was quoted as saying to Cricbuzz.

The incident took place when Ishant Sharma bowled a way outside the leg side with Devdutt Padikkal in the crease. The umpire had no hesitation in calling the ball wide. However, Pant and his teammates swarm in towards the on-field officials. Despite the DRS review being taken, Pant continued to argue with the umpires over a long period.

However, commentators Pommie Mbangwa and Deep Dasgupta later clarified that Pant’s dissatisfaction was visible due to the lack of usage of snickometer which would have determined whether there was an outside edge or not. The Delhi Capitals skipper also gestured with his gloves pressed against his ears that there might have been a sound from the bat.

Gilchrist was visibly frustrated with Pant. “It’s a very simple conversation, I believe. No matter how much Rishabh is complaining or any other player is complaining, umpires should just say, ‘it’s over’ and quickly move on. But if he keeps talking, he should get fined,” added the southpaw.
