R Ashwin announced his retirement in Australian style. To understand this Australian style, we have to remember the 2008 series. The fourth match of the Test series between India and Australia was going on in Adelaide. During the match, an easy catch of VVS Laxman was missed by Adam Gilchrist. The visual side of that catch being dropped was shown several times on the screen. Adam Gilchrist got very angry. He wondered how he could give up such an easy catch. He immediately told Matthew Hayden – Enough now. On the same day, after the regular press conference held every day in the Test match, Australia's media manager told that Adam Gilchrist also wanted to hold a press conference. Adam came within a few minutes and announced his retirement.
It is also important to understand some things related to Gilchrist's retirement. The test match in which Adam retired was his 96th match. After 4 matches, he was going to be included in the list of cricketers who played 100 test matches. He had to play his 100th test match in India. But regardless of all these things, Gilchrist said goodbye to the game. That day once again the saying regarding Sannyasa proved to be meaningful that Sannyasa should be taken only when people ask you - Why now? Don't take it when people ask you why not yet? R Ashwin showed a similar style on Wednesday. In the three matches played so far in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, he got a chance only in one. After thinking carefully, he decided that instead of hanging out with the team, the time had come to return. He cannot remain a burden on the team.
Even though Ashwin announced his retirement in Brisbane, the Test series against New Zealand will be considered a major reason for this decision. India had to face 3-0 defeat in the home Test series against New Zealand. This was the first time in India's 92-year Test history that a team defeated it 3-0 in a three-Test series. Ashwin's performance in all three test matches was absolutely average. He got 1 wicket in Bengaluru. He was successful in taking five wickets in Pune and three in Mumbai. This was not Ashwin's identity. If the Indian team is playing matches at home, then Ashwin was a major reason for victory in those matches on most of the occasions. If you look at the statistics, you will find that hardly any player has won as many Test matches played in India as he has.
Ashwin must have understood that now the time has come to say goodbye to the game. In recent times, Washington Sundar is also being seen as his successor. Washington Sundar still has a long way to go. But he has also been becoming a 'trump card' for Gautam Gambhir. Ashwin must have come to Australia after the tour against New Zealand thinking that if the performance is good then it will be fine, otherwise he will not delay in taking a big decision. He got only 1 wicket in the Adelaide Test in Australia. This was enough to implement the decision of retirement.
There is no breaking of R Ashwin as a player. He was in love with cricket. This love will continue in future also but not by staying with Team India. It is said about Ashwin that if you call him even at midnight and tell him that you want to go to play a match, then you will find him ready. This was Ashwin's passion. He won the title of Player of the Match in his very first Test match. In that match played in Delhi, India defeated West Indies by five wickets and took 9 wickets in their account. When Ashwin said goodbye to his career, he had a record 11 Player of the Series awards in his account. In this figure, Muttiah is equal to Muralitharan. In the last tour of Australia, Ashwin had saved the match for India despite suffering injuries on his body. For him there was no one before the team. The Indian team also always stood with him.
Remember, during a match this year, when his mother's health deteriorated, Rohit Sharma advised him to go home in the middle of the match. BCCI not only agreed to this but also made necessary arrangements. R Ashwin lived the word 'team'. He continued to live with this feeling till his last day on the cricket field. Now you will see Ashwin in IPL next year. Ashwin was an important part of the Chennai team. He played IPL for 2-3 more franchises but now he has returned back to Chennai. For the next year, Chennai Super Kings team has bought him for around Rs 10 crore. At the time of announcing his retirement, he also said that he felt that there was some cricket left in him but now that little cricket would not be international but IPL or such tournaments. Ashwin has been known as a 'thinking cricketer'. That is, wait after a few months, when he will come to the field in colorful clothes, then some new quivers will definitely have been added to his bowling.
