Not 1, not 10, full 14 years. It is not easy to remain involved in international cricket for so long. But, Ashwin was among those select players who not only spent almost one and a half decade in international cricket but also emerged as the biggest match winner of the team. Ashwin played the role of match winner for Team India in all three formats of cricket. We will talk about what Ashwin did with the Indian team in 14 years. But, before that it is also important to know about other aspects of his life. How did Ashwin get kidnapped? And how did he transform from a medium pacer to the world's best off-spinner?
When Ashwin started playing cricket, he used to play medium pace. It was his childhood school coach CK Vijayakumar who helped him transform from a medium pacer to an off-spinner. Vijay Kumar told in an interview to Sportstar that this incident happened when Ashwin used to study in 11th class. He was bowling medium pace in the nets. When he got tired while bowling, he came and asked, can I make him off-spin? Vijayakumar said that he agreed with Ashwin's words. The coach told that his off-spin gradually emerged as his special talent.
Vijay Kumar further said that however, the next day Ashwin again came to me and talked about getting me medium pace. But, I refused him. After that day he never off-spinned again. After that I told his father that off-spin was his future.
Like the school coach had advised Dhoni to change from football goalkeeper to cricket wicketkeeper and he touched the sky. Ashwin also touched the same sky in cricket by becoming an off-spinner on the advice of his school coach. In his international career of 14 years, he emerged as India's second most successful Test bowler, with 537 wickets in 106 Tests. Talking about his entire international career, Ashwin took 765 wickets in his name.
