New Delhi: Josh Hazlewood is heartbroken after being ruled out of the Border-Gavaskar series with a right calf strain that he sustained during the ongoing third Test at the Gabba, his team-mate Nathan Lyon said on Tuesday.
The pacer hobbled out of action at the Gabba and subsequent tests ruled him not only out of the Brisbane Test but also from the fourth and fifth games in Melbourne and Sydney, Cricket Australia later confirmed.
Nathan Lyon said though they are concerned about Hazlewood they would support him wholeheartedly and provide him comfort. Hazlewood’s absence made Australia a man short as they failed to force India to follow-on.
They had put India under pressure at 213/9, still 33 runs short of the follow-in mark after Australia had put on 445 in their first innings. But Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep put on an unbeaten 39-run 10th wicket stand to avoid India from following-on.
Though they are still 193 runs behind, India believe they have done enough to force a draw with only a day’s play left in the rain-hit game.
‘Hazlewood is flat’
"He’s pretty flat, But we’ll get around him, put our arm around him and show a bit of care and love for the big fella. He’s pretty despondent," Lyon told ABC Sports on Hazlewood.
After bowling only one over on Tuesday, Hazlewood had to leave the field after consulting with skipper Pat Cummins and physio Nick Jones.
“(He) felt it this morning in warm-ups, gave it a good crack, it’s just unfortunate for him to come back, put so much effort after another injury with the side strain, then to pick up a calf strain here, particularly in these circumstances is really tough on him," Australia’s assistant coach Daniel Vettori said.
