Samson has excelled in the IPL 2024, scoring 246 runs in just 5 matches. He has hit 3 fifties so far, ranking 4th for most runs this season. In RR’s 5th league match on April 10, Samson stayed unbeaten on 68 against Gujarat Titans. Batting at a strike rate of 179, he faced 38 balls, hitting 7 fours and 2 sixes. His 130-run partnership with Riyan Parag (76) helped RR post 196/3 in their 20 overs.

In his 50th match as Rajasthan Royals captain, Sanju Samson broke Rohit Sharma’s eight-year-old IPL record for most runs scored in a player’s 50th match as captain. Samson scored 68 runs against the Gujarat Titans, surpassing Rohit’s previous record of 65 runs scored for Mumbai Indians against Delhi Capitals at Arun Jaitley Stadium in 2016. The 29-year-old Samson has now set the new benchmark for runs scored by a player in their 50th match leading an IPL franchise.

In addition to Samson and Rohit, Gautam Gambhir also scored a half-century in his 50th match as captain in the IPL. Playing for KKR against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2013, Gambhir made 59 runs.

Highest scores in 50th IPL game as a captain

  • 68* (38) – Sanju Samson (RR) vs GT, 2024
  • 65 (48) – Rohit Sharma (MI) vs DC, 2016
  • 59 (46) – Gautam Gambhir (KKR) vs RCB, 2013
  • 45 (33) – David Warner (SRH) vs DC, 2021

Samson is the second Rajasthan Royals player, after Shane Warne, to captain the team in at least 50 Indian Premier League games. He is a strong candidate to make India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad as a wicketkeeper-batter. In the Indian Premier League, Warne won 30 of his 55 captaincy games, while the right-handed hitter has won 26 of his 50 games.

Samson scored his third fifty in the IPL 2024 on Wednesday, but the Royals were defeated by the Gujarat Titans. Even though the Royals’ three-wicket loss in Jaipur was their first IPL loss of the season, they still top the points table with eight points from five games.
