Former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma recently came on Gaurav Kapoor’s show Breakfast with Champions. Famous singer Ed Sheeran was also one of the guests. Rohit spoke about the growth of the Indian Premier League and how comprehensive it has become in the last one decade.
Rohit is currently playing for MI in IPL 2024. The veteran has played a few attacking knocks in the 17th season, with Mumbai winning two matches in a row after going down to Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals.
Rohit has been hogging the limelight since he was sacked as captain by the five-time champions. He was replaced by Hardik Pandya, who returned from Gujarat after two seasons. Sharma is happy with the popularity of the cash-rich league.
“Indian Premier League has grown a lot in the last one decade. The competition is of the highest quality as there are no weak franchises in the tournament,” Rohit Sharma said.
However, Ed Sheeran didn’t like his comment and pulled the legendary opener. “You are saying that because your Indian teammates are part of the different franchises,” he said.
Rohit was not expecting this reply but maintained his calmness before replying.
“It is not like that. It has become competitive. Earlier, it was not. You have the English Premier League in England, and all the teams are strong enough to beat each other on a given day. The same is true with the Indian Premier League, and that’s why you can’t take any opponent lightly,” he added.
Sharma also shed light on India’s defeat against Australia in the ICC World Cup final.
“We were due to have one day, and unfortunately, it came in the final. Australia had a perfect day. I don’t think we played badly; Australia was just a bit better than us,” he said.
