The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is grappling with significant challenges as the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 approaches. At the heart of the issue lies India's reluctance to play in Pakistan, citing security and political concerns.

This refusal has led to calls for a "hybrid model," where matches involving India, and potentially other games, would be hosted in a neutral venue, such as the UAE.

However, the PCB has taken a firm stand against this model, insisting on hosting the entire tournament within Pakistan.

The PCB's Position

The Pakistan board's resistance to the hybrid model stems from its concerns about maintaining the country's hosting rights and credibility as a venue for international cricket. This stance is tied to a broader narrative of regaining Pakistan's status as a safe and reliable host after years of international isolation following the 2009 Lahore attacks on the Sri Lankan team. During the 2023 Asia Cup, the PCB reluctantly agreed to a hybrid hosting arrangement, which left them wary of setting a precedent for future events.

Proposed Solutions and Rejections

In a bid to find common ground, the PCB suggested organizing a tri-series involving India, Pakistan, and another nation before the Champions Trophy. This idea, however, was dismissed by both the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) as per a report by Cricbuzz. The rejection highlighted the broader challenges of balancing geopolitical tensions with the logistical and commercial needs of global tournaments.

Additionally, the PCB has reportedly sought compensation for the potential relocation of matches and assurances about Pakistan's role as a central host. These demands have complicated negotiations further, as financial and logistical considerations weigh heavily on the ICC and its member boards.

The ICC and Hybrid Hosting

The International Cricket Council appears inclined toward a hybrid model, viewing it as a pragmatic solution to ensure India's participation, which is critical for the tournament's commercial success. Broadcasters and sponsors see India as essential for generating revenue. Dubai has emerged as a favored neutral venue due to its established infrastructure and previous experience hosting international events. We have to wait till a final confirmation is made.
