Sherfane Rutherford's maiden international century helped West Indies claim a 5-wicket in a big run-chase against Bangladesh in the first of the three-match ODI series at the Warner Park in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis on Sunday (December 8).

Rutherford smashed 113 off 80 balls, sharing crucial stands with skipper Shai Hope (86 off 88 balls) and Justin Greaves (41 not out off 31 balls) as West Indies chased down 295, the highest successful chase in Warner Park, with 14 balls to spare.

Having lost both openers - Brandon King (9 off 17 balls) and Evin Lewis (16 off 31 balls) with 27 runs on board, captain Hope steadied the ship by sharing a 57-run partnership with Keacy Carty (21 off 37 balls) before the skipper forged a 99-run stand with the centurion Rutherford.

After Hope departed, the left-handed batter hit 8 sixes and 7 fours during his knock of 113, and later linked up with Greaves for a 95-run stand. Once Rutherford departed, Greaves saw the Windies across the line batting alongside Roston Chase, who remained unbeaten on 2 off 3 balls.

For Bangladesh, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Soumya Sarkar, Nahid Rana, Rishad Hossain and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz all claimed a wicket each, but none of the bowlers withstood the onslaught from Rutherford and Co.

Earlier, having opted to bat first, Bangladesh, who lost Soumya Sarkar (19 off 18 balls) and Litton Kumer Das (2 off 7 balls) with 46 runs on the board, steadied the ship through a vital 79-run stand between Tanzid Hasan (60 off 60 balls) and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz (74 off 101 balls).

Once Mehidy and Tanzid departed, the onus was on Mahmudullah, who remained unbeaten on 50 from 44 balls, while Jaker Ali (48 off 40 balls) joined forces to share a 96-run stand for the sixth wicket, helping Bangladesh to 294/6 in their alloted 50 overs.

For the West Indies, Romario Shepherd was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 3 for 51 in 10 overs, while fellow pacers - Alzarri Joseph claimed two wickets and Jayden Seales chipped in with one wicket.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz-led Bangladesh will soon look to bounce back and level the series when they face Hope's West Indies at the same venue in St Kitts and Nevis on Tuesday (December 10) in the second ODI before the series concludes on Thursday (December 12).
