Kyle Verreynne has joined AB de Villiers in the list of three wicketkeeper-batters to have scored Test hundreds at the St George's Park in Gqeberha.
The 27-year-old achieved the feat on Day 2 of the second Test against Sri Lanka on Friday, December 6. Verreynne scored an unbeaten 105 off 133 balls, hitting 12 fours and three sixes in his knock.
Back in March 1949, Walter Wade became the first wicketkeeper to hit a hundred at the venue in Gqeberha. He scored 125 runs against England, but the Proteas lost the match by three wickets.
In February 2014, De Villiers scored 116 runs off 232 balls with 14 fours and one six. On the back of his knock, South Africa beat the Aussies by 231 runs to draw level in the three-match Test series.
Kyle Verreynne shines for South Africa
In 22 Tests thus far, Verreynne has scored 947 runs at an average of 32.65. He racked up his maiden Test ton back in February 2022 against New Zealand at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Back in October, the right-handed batter scored 114 against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
As far as the ongoing Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka is concerned, Verreyne did his job with precision. At Stumps on Day 1, he was unbeaten on 48. He carried his form on Day 2 as well, getting to his half-century off 95 balls.
Verreynne then put his head down to get to his three-figure score off 132 balls. He made sure that South Africa racked up a decent score of 358 on the board in 103.4 overs.
Earlier on Day 1, it was Ryan Rickelton who scored a hundred with a 101-run knock before Lahiru Kumara dismissed him. Verreynne has also played 17 ODIs for South Africa, scoring 488 runs with five fifties.
