Former New Zealand fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan believes Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson will not be selected as India’s number 3 batter for the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup.
McClenaghan critiqued Rajasthan’s loss while appearing on ESPNcricinfo’s post-match analysis with Deep Dasgupta and Tom Moody. His comments came after Gujarat Titans defeated Rajasthan on the final ball of match 24, ending Samson’s undefeated run as captain this IPL season.
The Rajasthan Royals batting order has looked steady from the start of this season, but Samson deserves particular credit for his skillful bowling changes. He has expertly managed a bowling lineup featuring big names like Trent Boult, Sandeep Sharma, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Samson’s astute handling of the bowlers has been impressive.
In addition to his leadership as captain, Sanju Samson has made valuable contributions with the bat while batting at number 3. He has often set the tone for the team’s innings, leading the way for other batters with his effective batting.
During the 1st innings of last night’s match against Gujarat Titans, Samson showcased his leadership and batting prowess. The 29-year old first anchored Rajasthan’s innings with a 130-run partnership with Riyan Parag, then provided the finishing touches in the death overs, playing with his trademark flair.
McClenaghan admitted that he is a big fan of Sanju Samson. However, Mc feels Samson will likely not make India’s playing XI for the ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies due to the team’s depth of wicketkeeper-batter.
“Although Sanju Samson is one of my favorite players, but with India’s current top three batters seemingly locked in, I don’t foresee him being selected. Right or wrong, his path to the team appears closed for now.” said the former IPL winner.
The former pacer also believes Samson will make a strong backup for the team’s top order. McClenaghan praised Samson as one of the best number 3 Indian batter in IPL history.
“That being said, I wouldn’t exclude Sanju Samson as a backup wicket-keeper or batter for your top three. I know Shubman Gill also comes into the conversation, but I think Samson is arguably one of the best number three batters of all time in the IPL.” McClenaghan added.
Samson doesn’t get regular chances and his deemed unfit for the nationl team after a couple of failures.
