The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 continues to sizzle with high-octane matches and individual brilliance. The latest clash between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Gujarat Titans (GT) was a prime example, featuring stellar performances from Sanju Samson, Riyan Parag, Shubman Gill, Rashid Khan and Kuldeep Sen.
Gill, leading the Gujarat Titans, emerged as the hero with a match-winning knock of 72 (44). His valiant effort saw the Titans chase down a mammoth target of 197 runs in the final oversending the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur into a frenzy.
While the on-field action stole the show, a section of the audience engaged in unwanted off-field behaviour. Chants of “How is our sister-in-law, how is our sister-in-law?” (loosely translating to “How is our sister-in-law? Like Sara Tendulkar”) erupted, referencing unsubstantiated rumours linking Gill with Sachin Tendulkar’s daughter, Sara.
These chants, even if intended as lighthearted fun, were met with disapproval by many, including the official Rajasthan Royals social media handle, which promptly declared, “Stop with those chants, guys.”
The incident highlights a recurring problem for Shubman. Rumours linking him with Sara have been a source of unwanted attention, overshadowing his cricketing achievements.
In a lighter vein, Gill himself recently clarified his relationship status during a conversation with musician Ed Sheeranstating that he is single, a comment that grabbed eyeballs.
The IPL strives to be a family-friendly event. While passionate support is encouraged, fans must remember to respect players’ privacy and avoid disruptive behaviour. Hopefully, the focus can remain on the thrilling cricket on display.
