Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa is eager to earn a spot in the Test team after the team's disappointing loss against India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener. Adam Zampa said that he is feeling comfortable with red-ball cricket despite having played only three first-class matches in the past few years.

The Pat Cummins-led team suffered their second-largest defeat in terms of runs on home soil. Australia lost the first match by 295 runs at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Nathan Lyon failed to pick up any wickets in the first innings and secured two while the Indians played attacking shots in the second innings.

Adam Zampa Has Played Three First-Class Matches This Decade

Zampa has made himself unavailable for first-class matches due to his white-ball commitments. Over his career, he has taken 115 first-class wickets in 41 games at an average of 46.56. Zampa has taken 10 wickets at an impressive average of 28.7 in the three first-class games he has played this decade.

The spinner took four wickets in New South Wales' Sheffield Shield loss to Tasmania. It was his first Shield game since February 2023. This performance has kept him in the mix for the Test squad. He is unlikely to be picked for the home series against India but remains in consideration for the Sri Lanka tour.

I'd Like To Do And Challenge Myself At - Adam Zampa

Adam Zampa believes he is currently a better red-ball bowler than at any point in his career. He expressed his desire to earn a spot in Australia's Test squad for the Sri Lanka tour. Zampa stated that his career might not end with a Test debut, but he didn't want to regret not giving it his all.

"It's something I'd like to do and challenge myself at. If I got to end my career and it didn't pan out that way then I'd be okay with it," Zampa said.

"I might look back one day and feel like maybe I didn't give it a 100 per cent crack. I feel like playing these games and putting my hand up for the Sri Lanka tour and being keen for that is fine."

"It's important if I am on that tour that I have a bit of mileage in my legs and it's not a huge shock to the system because Sunday was," he added.

I Was Eager To Play A Lot Of First-Class Cricket - Adam Zampa

Adam Zampa said that his early years in red-ball cricket were impacted by a lack of confidence and consistency, despite being eager to play. He stated that his confidence and ability to read the game have improved over time. Zampa added that he hasn’t given his full shot in red-ball cricket yet.

"I was eager to play a lot of first-class cricket when I was young, but I probably wasn't good enough or as confident as I am now," Zampa said.

"I bowled a lot more bad balls than I do know. I wasn't confident with my own reading of the game whereas now I feel like I can read guys a lot better and have less mental fog. It's being able to have a bit more resilience on day-one wickets when you're trying to hold up an end."
