The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has shown no urgency to send the recovered Mohammed Shami to Australia for the remaining four Test matches in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 as the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel is yet to take a call on the participation of the pacer, who took 7 wickets in the first match after almost a year. He is playing for Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Shami was injured during the 2023 ODI World Cup and underwent ankle surgery in February this year and only returned to the field in a Ranji Trophy game for Bengal against Madhya Pradesh earlier this month.
Former players wanted the board to fly the speedster to Australia, but the board is not in a rush. According to a report in the Times of India, the BCCI has no plans for Shami at the moment.
“There have been no conversations about sending Shami to Australia . The fast bowlers in Australia did a good job in Perth,” a source said.
Shami was picked by Bengal for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he took three wickets.
In the first Test against Australia, three pacers, Jasprit Bumrah (8 wickets), Mohammed Siraj (5 wickets), and Harshit Rana (4 wickets), were brilliant with the ball as the visitors won the contest by 295 runs. After getting dismissed for 150 runs in their first innings, India restricted Australia to 104.
Centuries by Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli took the team’s total to 487/6 declared. Chasing 534 runs to win, the hosts were bowled out for 238 runs.
