Gujarat Titans have defeated Rajasthan Royals by 3 wickets in the match played at Sawai Mansingh Stadium. Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals have lost their first match in IPL 2024 after four consecutive wins, while this is Gujarat Titans’ third win. Batting first, Royals scored 196 runs at the loss of three wickets in 20 overs. In response to which Gujarat won the match by scoring 199 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs. Captain Shubhman Gill scored the highest 72 runs for Gujarat. For Rajasthan Royals, Kuldeep Sen took three wickets and Chahal took two wickets.
While chasing the Royals’ target of 197 runs, the Titans team scored 20 overs with the partnership of 36 runs in 14 balls for the seventh wicket between Rashid (24 not out in 11 balls) and Tewatia (21 runs in 11 balls, three fours). Won by scoring 199 runs for seven wickets. Captain Shubhman Gill (72) and Sai Sudarshan (35) gave a good start to the team by adding 64 runs for the first wicket.
For Royals, Kuldeep Sen (three wickets for 41 runs) and Yuzvendra Chahal (two wickets for 43 runs) took wickets but all their bowlers proved costly.
Riyan Parag (76 runs in 48 balls, five sixes, three fours) and captain Sanju Samson (68 not out in 38 balls, two sixes, seven fours), apart from scoring half-centuries earlier, scored 130 runs in 78 balls for the third wicket. Made a partnership due to which Royals scored 196 runs for three wickets. The team was successful in adding 108 runs in the last eight overs.
The pair of Gill and Sudarshan gave a cautious start to the Titans while chasing the target. Both added 44 runs in the power play without losing any wicket. After opening the account with a four off Trent Boult, Sudarshan delivered Avesh Khan’s ball to the audience.
Gill also hit sixes on Keshav Maharaj and Avesh.
Sudarshan welcomed Yuzvendra Chahal with two consecutive fours. Chahal also took a very easy catch of Sudarshan after one ball.
Fast bowler Sen broke this partnership by LBWing Sudarshan. The on-field umpire had given the batsman not out but after taking DRS he had to change his decision. Facing 29 balls, he hit three fours and a six.
After this, the game stopped for a few minutes due to rain and after the break, Sen’s first ball was hit by Matthew Wade (04).
After two balls, Sen also bowled Abhinav Manohar (01), making Gujarat’s score 79 runs for three wickets.
Gill held one end. He completed his half-century in 35 balls with two runs off Chahal.
Titans’ century was completed in the 13th over.
Vijay Shankar (16) hit a four on Chahal but was bowled by the same leg spinner.
Titans needed 73 runs to win in the last five overs. Gill hit two consecutive fours on Chahal but Samson stumped him on the next ball. Facing 44 balls, he hit six fours and two sixes.
Shahrukh Khan increased the run pace by hitting sixes and fours on consecutive balls of Ashwin.
Avesh gave only seven runs in the 18th over and also trapped Shahrukh (14) LBW.
Titans needed 35 runs from the last two overs. Rahul Tewatia hit two wickets while Rashid Khan hit a four, resulting in 20 runs in the over.
Despite Tewatia being run out in the last over, Rashid gave victory to the Titans by hitting three fours on Avesh.
Earlier, Gill won the toss and invited the Royals to bat and their bowlers did not allow the opposition batsmen to play freely in the beginning. Yashasvi Jaiswal (24) opened the account with a four on Umesh Yadav (one wicket for 47 runs) and then hit two consecutive fours in the next over of this fast bowler.
Jaiswal hit another four on Umesh but was caught by wicketkeeper Matthew Wade on the next ball.
Samson started his innings with two consecutive fours on Umesh but veteran leg spinner Rashid Khan (1 wicket for 18 runs) had opener Jos Buttler (08) caught by Rahul Tewatia in the slips.
Royals scored 43 runs for two wickets in the power play.
The spinner pair of Noor Ahmed and Rashid kept the run rate in check in the middle overs. Parag scored runs by hitting a six on Noor and a four on Rashid.
Parag took the team’s score past 100 runs with two sixes on Noor in the 13th over and then completed his third half-century of the season in 34 balls with a six on Mohit Sharma (one wicket for 51 runs).
Samson also hit two fours and a six on fast bowler Spencer Johnson in the 15th over.
Samson was lucky in Mohit’s over when the full toss was played in the air at long on but Tewatia could not take the catch due to slipping and the ball went for four runs due to which the Royals captain completed his half-century in 31 balls.
Parag ultimately became the victim of a brilliant catch by Vijay Shankar at long off in the 19th over of Mohit’s innings.
Shimron Hetmyer (13 not out) opened his account with a four on the first ball of Mohit. He and Samson hit sixes in the last over of Umesh and took the team’s score close to 200 runs.
Titans’ fielding once again did not live up to expectations. The fielders dropped many catches and also gave away extra runs.
