Ex-India captain Sourav Ganguly has come out in support of head coach Gautam Gambhir following the flak the latter is facing from former Australia players for his comment on Ricky Ponting. India recently lost to New Zealand by a margin of 0-3 in the Test series, and the players are under pressure ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024. Gambhir hasn’t been impressive as a head coach.

He was asked a question about Ricky Ponting’s comment on Virat Kohli’s place in the Test team. Gambhir defended Kohli and urged Ponting to keep an eye on Australian cricket and not India. However, Tim Paine, Brad Haddin, Michael Vaughan, and several other players blasted his statement.

Ganguly said that Gambhir should be left alone, and there was nothing wrong with what he said.

“Leave him alone and let him work the way he wants. I saw him getting criticised on what he said before leaving for Australia. This is the way he behaves. When he won the IPL with KKR, he was lauded by everyone. Just because he lost to Sri Lanka and New Zealand, his words were not taken in the right context. This is the way he is,” Sourav Ganguly said on RevSportz.

“Australians play tough cricket and they have been following this trend since a long time. Whether it was Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting or Matthew Hayden. So, there is nothing wrong with what Gautam Gambhir said in the press conference. He fights and competes and let us give him a chance. It is too early to pass a judgement,” he added.
