Many great captains have graced the fabric of Indian cricket over the years. But in the 21st century, Indian cricket's exponential growth has definitely been boosted by some tremendous leaders.
The gatha started with Sourav Ganguly, who taught team India to not fear the big guns, and team India learned to win against the giants of the game outside Indian soil. Ganguly led from the front, backed his young brigade, picked the stars of the future and nurtured an entire generation who went on to dominate the next decade or so for India. MS Dhoni instilled a trophy-winning mentality and honed his captaincy skills on the back of that. Under his captaincy, team India registered three ICC titles, the first of which was the T20 World Cup in 2007. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have then played their part as India captain, the latter still central to India's leadership in ODIs and Tests. But seventeen years from that 20007 T20 World Cup, it is a new Indian generation who are learning its trade, mastering their skills to slay the giants, under the guidance of Suryakumar Yadav. Rohit Sharma's swansong as India's T20 captain ended with the T20 World Cup triumph back in June. Immediately, BCCI decided to pass on the captaincy baton to Suryakumar Yadav. Although many thought the throne was unfairly denied from Hardik Pandya, the signs of the Indian team are showing why Suryakumar Yadav is the perfect successor. Suryakumar Yadav - A Leader over A Captain Surya has led this Indian team against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh - and this South Africa series is his 3rd as India's permanent T20I captain. India have so far been on an excellent run under him, but beyond the results, the holistic growth of this young brigade looks excellent. Suryakumar has built a convoy of security and trust with his peers, which is reaping fruits for India in the shortest format. Sanju Samson scored consecutive centuries for India and credited Surya for backing him. The clarity the India captain provided Sanju was enough to feel wanted in the team and eased the batter, which saw the Kerala player scoring two sublime centuries. And again, in the 3rd T20I against South Africa, Tilak Varma was seen coming out to bat at no. 3 - and the southpaw scored a century. When asked about the reason of him coming out to bat after the first wicket, Tilak credited the skipper. It was Surya, who sacrificed his own place to give the 22-year-old a crack, and he delivered. "Credit goes to the captain as he gave me the opportunity. I am really happy and always thankful, it was all for Surya. Before the match he told me that I could bat there," an ecstatic Tilak said at the post-match press conference. The India captain has led his team from the front. He has been always smiling, backing the young troops and getting the best out of them with his warmth. And it feels like a deja vu in Indian cricket. Suryakumar Yadav - showing traits of Sourav Ganguly In the folklore of Indian cricket, Sourav Ganguly's name shall always be written as the leader who changed the face of cricket in the country. Amid the match-fixing doldrums, Ganguly formed the team India with the youngsters and led them to greatness. He was the 'Dada' (Elder Brother in Bengali Language) of Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Ashis Nehra and all - some stalwarts of Indian cricket who all thrived under the leadership of the Prince of Kolkata. Although Surya hasn't faced adversities, he is making his own mark in the T20 format. With Virat, Rohit and Jadeja out of the picture, Surya is slowly becoming the Bhau (Elder Brother in Marathi) of this young Indian brigade. In 2004, during a match against Pakistan, Sourav Ganguly, amid some torrid form of his own, promoted a certain player against Pakistan, who went on to score a century. That same player went on to lead India to three ICC titles. Surya's move to promote Tilak has a similar trait. The way Surya has backed the youngsters speaks volumes about his mindset as a leader of the team, who is ready to sacrifice his own cause for the team. The environment in the team and the freedom of the players are also crucial factors where the India captain has received full marks so far. The Mumbai-born will have the opportunity to nurture this young Indian brigade for the next couple of years, at least. The Indian team has showcased a lot of improvements in the T20 format in the last few months, and Surya has the ability to create loftier success. By no means Suryakumar Yadav is anywhere close to Sourav Ganguly. It will take years for him to build his own legacy, but the earlier trait looks promising. And for the future, SKY is the limit.
