Latest News :- Retired Chief Justice Chandrachud delivered the verdict on his last day of duty and wiped away the tears of parents who had sought mercy killing for their son. Chandrachud was sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on November 9, 2022. During his tenure as a judge and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, he has given many important judgments. Notably, he has written landmark judgments in cases including Ayodhya Ram Temple, removal of special status from Kashmir, election donation papers. Chandrachud retired on the 10th. On the last day of work, he has given a big decision with compassion.
Mercy killing case: Ashok Rana (60) from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. His wife is Nirmala Devi (55). His eldest son is Harish (30). In 2013, Harish was studying civil engineering at Chandigarh University. While staying in the university hostel, he slipped and fell from the fourth floor balcony of the hostel on 5 August 2013. He was immediately admitted to the government hospital in Chandigarh. He was in coma and was admitted to Delhi AIIMS for further treatment. Even after treatment in various government and private hospitals for almost 11 years, Harish did not come out of coma. He is given food through a tube.
Harish's father Ashok Rana worked in a hotel. He was paid Rs 28,000 per month. Out of this, he used to spend 27 thousand rupees on the treatment of his son. He was running the family with the help of relatives and friends. Ashok Rana retired from service 2 years ago. Now she is making and selling snacks at home to support her family. This did not yield sufficient revenue. He had no money left to spend on his son's treatment. In this context, he filed a petition in the Delhi High Court to allow mercy killing of his son. The petition was rejected. Ashok Rana had appealed against this in the Supreme Court last August.
A bench headed by the then Chief Justice Chandrachud heard the case. The Chief Justice heard the case quickly to deliver the verdict before retiring. Chandrachut delivered the verdict on the 10th, his last day of work. The judgment said: The son, Harish, who is in a coma, is being cared for by his parents at their home in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. He does not have enough financial resources to afford his son's treatment.
Keeping this in mind, the entire treatment cost of Harish should be borne by the Uttar Pradesh government. He should be treated at home only. If Harish's health deteriorates, he should be admitted to the government hospital in Noida and given proper treatment. This has been said in the decision. Many people on social media are praising Chandrachud for giving the decision to wipe the tears of the parents who were pleading for mercy killing of their son.
