Usman Khawaja has opened up on David Warner’s idea of coming out of retirement to play in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024 against India. The legendary cricketer was ready to help the national team after the team management failed to find a suitable opening partner for Khawaja. Steve Smith was tried, but his low returns as an opener forced captain Pat Cummins and head coach Andrew McDonald to send him back to the No.4 slot.
However, Warner’s suggestion was rejected by Cummins, who told him to enjoy the Big Bash League. Some of the former players slammed Warner for his statement.
Nathan McSweeney will open the innings along with Khawaja in the series opener.
Usman called Warner’s remark hilarious. “David Warner knows how to create drama. I know he can still do it for Australia, but he retired last year after a successful career. I love him as he likes to stir people up,” Usman Khawaja told the World Wide Sports.
Khawaja mentioned that Warner is playing T20 format and spending time with his wife and kids.
“He would return to play for Australia if the management send him a message. I think he was in playful mode when he made that remark on his wish to return to play Test cricket. He is currently enjoying T20 cricket and is spending time with his family,” he added.
