With the IPL 2025 mega auction fast approaching, Yuzvendra Chahalone of the most successful bowlers in the league’s history, has become a hot commodity following his release from Rajasthan Royals (RR). As the leg-spinner with an impressive 205 IPL wickets prepares to enter the auction in Jeddah, several franchises are expected to bid aggressively for his experience and match-winning abilities.
1.) Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)
RCB are among the top contenders to bring back Chahal, who became a fan favourite during his stint with the team from 2014 to 2021. In those years, Chahal was instrumental in leading RCB’s bowling attack, claiming 177 wickets in 114 matches at an average of 21.50. His skill in controlling the middle overs and his knack for taking key wickets made him invaluable to RCB. A reunion could potentially revitalize their bowling lineup as they look to end their long-standing quest for an IPL title.
With a substantial budget of INR 83 crore after retaining only three players – Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar and Yash Dayal – RCB have ample funds to compete in the auction. Chahal’s former teammate AB de Villiers has also urged the franchise to prioritize his re-signing, stating, “Let’s just get Yuzi back at RCB where he belongs. He should never have left.” Bringing Chahal back could be a major strategic move for RCB, giving them an experienced spin option to support their pace attack and help Kohli guide the team through challenging middle overs. Chahal’s presence would add both skill and familiarity, and his return could potentially make the difference in RCB’s bid for their maiden title.
2.) Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
CSK, known for their effective use of spin at their home ground in Chepauk, are another team likely to pursue Chahal. If CSK succeeds, they would create a formidable spin pairing with Ravindra Jadejawho has long been the franchise’s go-to all-rounder. CSK have historically relied on experienced, adaptable players, and Chahal’s track record in high-stakes matches makes him an ideal fit.
Moreover, with MS Dhoni set to play as wicketkeeper, Chahal would benefit from the former’s tactical insights. Dhoni’s experience and leadership could significantly enhance Chahal’s effectiveness, especially on Chennai’s spin-friendly pitches. CSK are looking to bounce back from mixed performances in recent seasons, and adding a proven match-winner like Chahal could bolster their chances. The potential partnership between Jadeja and Chahal would not only make CSK’s spin attack one of the most feared in the league but also add depth and resilience to their bowling strategy.
3.) Mumbai Indians (MI)
MI are also expected to be strong contenders for Chahal’s services. Despite retaining a solid core of players such as jasprit bumrah and Suryakumar YadavMI faced challenges with their bowling attack last season, particularly in the spin department. Former cricketer Aakash Chopra has suggested that MI will likely target Chahal to address this gap, noting that they need an experienced spinner capable of taking control in key moments.
Chahal was first signed by MI in 2011, and a return to the franchise could be a full-circle moment. His familiarity with MI’s environment and his consistent performances in the IPL makes him a valuable prospect for the Mumbai-based team. MI have a strong purse of INR 45 crore after retaining key players, which places them in a good position to engage in a potential bidding war for Chahal if required. Adding Chahal could give MI the spin depth they need to support Bumrah and provide a balanced bowling attack.
Well, Chahal’s auction outcome could reshape the dynamics of IPL 2025, as his inclusion in any of these teams would strengthen their chances and add depth to their rosters. For RCB, securing Chahal could signal a serious bid for their first title, while for CSK, his partnership with Jadeja would fortify a spin-focused strategy. MI, meanwhile, would gain the much-needed balance in their bowling lineup, making them strong contenders once again.
