India spinner Varun Chakravarthy registered his career-best figures of 5 for 17 in the second T20I against South Africa, though his efforts could not prevent India from losing the game.
Playing against South Africa in Gqeberha, Varun was one of India's high points in an otherwise miserable game, where they lost by 3 wickets in a low-scoring thriller. Varun continued his superb run in this series where he has 8 wickets already in 2 matches. The Kolkata Knight Riders spinner spoke about his incredible comeback under the Suryakumar Yadav-Gautam Gambhir management on the back of his sensational Indian Premier League performance in 2024. Speaking on Jio Cinema, Varun revealed that he put in a lot of work on overhauling his bowling style. The spinner originally debuted for India in the run-up to the T20 World Cup 2021 but was dropped right after the team's unsuccessful campaign in the United Arab Emirates. Varun said that after getting cut off from the team he realised that he needed to work on his overspin and in the process ended up having a completely different identity as a bowler. "I had to go to the drawing board and check out all my videos and what I figured out was that I was bowling side-spin and it was not working out in the higher level. So I had to change everything about my bowling and it took me two years. I was bowling in the local leagues, TNPL, SMAT, Vijay Hazare and IPL also. When it worked out there, I started bowling it in international cricket," Varun said about the change of technique. Varun made his comeback to the Indian team in the T20I series against Bangladesh at home. On his comeback to the national team, the spinner scalped three crucial wickets. He continued his superb form into this series and has 8 wickets already from 2 games. The spinner spoke about his secret to success and said that both side-spin and over-spin have helped him to become a deadly force in the T20Is. "Definitely it's a combination of both (sidespin and overspin). Definitely the overspin, which I'm bowling, definitely has more bite from the pitch and hopefully I can keep doing it, hopefully I can keep contributing for the country," Varun Chakravarthy said about his bowling. But what exactly is over-spin? Over-spin is a weapon used by spinners to put additional revs on the ball, which dips the ball faster than usual due to the Magnus Effect. The overspin also has impact on the bounce of the ball as the rapidly turning ball aids the bounce off the pitch against the batter, putting them in trouble. Varun said that he has worked on his clarity as well before coming back into the Indian team. The spinner said that he is focus more on clarity and less on confidence as confidence has taken him to the wrong path many a times. "I would say I' more focusing towards clarity and that's helping me uh more right now. Sometimes I feel confidence can lead me to a wrong direction and can make me believe that I can do something which is impossible. So I feel clarity focusing on clarity is better. So I've focused on that more," Varun said. So, what is his goal now? Varun finishes off with a simple one-liner. "All I want is to have a longer run for the Indian cricket team and hopefully I can do it well," concluded Varun.
