Team India’s current head coach Gautam Gambhir is under pressure after the sub-continent nation was whitewashed by New Zealand. The 3-0 defeat has divided former players as well. While Sunil Gavaskar took a dig at Gambhir for his falling fortunes, Sunil Joshi has come out in support of the current head coach. Gambhir, who replaced Rahul Dravid in July, has experienced a rough start to his stint.
The side was defeated 0-2 by Sri Lanka in the ODI series and now 0-3 home Test series loss against New Zealand hasn’t been taken lightly. The result broke the team’s 12-year unbeaten home run in the longest format of the game.
In his interview with TOI, Joshi backed Gambhir.
“Gautam Gambhir is a fighter and you can’t question his commitment towards the game and the team. No coach wants to lose matches. He needs time and we shouldn’t judge him after two series. He will be disappointed after India’s defeat against New Zealand. Don’t judge his acumen or his commitment,” he said.
“He will be successful. I know that. Let him and other coaches settled down. You can’t judge him after two years.”
The Men in Blue won the T20I series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh under Gambhir’s coaching. India also defeated Sri Lanka 3-0 in an away T20I series and crushed Bangladesh 2-0 in the home Test series before the New Zealand debacle.
