With the IPL 2025 auction on the horizon, teams are likely to reassess their overseas contingents, aiming for a balance of experience, fitness and current form. Several prominent international stars may be released as franchises seek to refresh their squads.
Here’s a look at five overseas players, including veterans and recent performers, who could be released ahead of IPL 2025 auction:
1. David Warner (Delhi Capitals)
David Warner’s impact on the IPL over the years has been undeniable, with his aggressive batting at the top order making him a constant threat. However, the Australian southpaw is now facing the latter stages of his career, and his recent performances in franchise cricket have been inconsistent. Even in IPL 2024, Warner struggled to maintain a consistent strike rate and sometimes lacked the explosive starts he’s known for. This, coupled with his age and Delhi Capitals’ desire to cultivate a younger team, makes him a likely candidate for release. Delhi may look to invest in a younger, dynamic opener to lead the charge, creating opportunities for Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abishek Porel.
2. Jos Buttler (Rajasthan Royals)
Jos Buttler, one of Rajasthan Royals’ marquee players, has been a match-winner for the franchise on multiple occasions. However, due to calf injury he has missed several international series for England in recent times. He is also not part of the English squad currently on the tour of Caribbean Islands.
Moreover, Rajasthan may feel releasing him and free up a budget for other players. A shift in the team’s tactical approach could lead to Buttler being released to accommodate all-rounders or younger batting talents.
3. Jonny Bairstow (Punjab Kings)
Jonny Bairstow’s aggressive style has made him an asset in T20 cricket, yet his performance in recent IPL seasons has been hampered by injuries. Punjab Kings invested heavily in Bairstow, but his returns have not justified the expenditure, with fitness concerns keeping him out of key matches. Additionally, Punjab has a strong lineup of Indian batters, which might reduce the need for an overseas top-order player. This opens the door for Bairstow’s release as Punjab may focus on acquiring reliable all-rounders or bowlers, which would give the team a better balance and strengthen their title chances in 2025.
4. Faf du Plessis (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)
Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s captain, Faf du Plessis, has been a consistent performer in the IPL, leading the team with experience and contributing vital runs. However, at 40, du Plessis’s age is a factor that may prompt RCB to reconsider their investment. Despite his steady performances, RCB may look to bring in a younger player who can grow with the franchise over the years and allow them a fresh direction for the future.
Releasing Du Plessis would also free up budget space, allowing RCB to target a young, aggressive overseas player or invest in more versatile all-round options in the auction.
5. Cameron Green (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)
Cameron Green was a big signing for RCB, with his all-round abilities holding promise. However, his inconsistent performances with both bat and ball may lead RCB to reassess his role within the team. While he showed glimpses of brilliance, Green’s lack of consistency and hefty price tag may lead to his release as RCB seeks players with proven IPL experience or consistency in the format. The Bengaluru-based franchise may want to redirect their resources toward strengthening their bowling attack or acquiring a more experienced finisher to complement their strong top order.
These potential releases reflect franchises’ desire to maintain a balanced squad that aligns with current form, age, and fitness levels. Teams are aiming to build versatile lineups capable of sustaining high performance over the long IPL season.
