Team India, desperate to make a comeback after losing the Bengaluru Test, gave a strong performance on the very first day of the Pune Test. On the very first day of the second Test of the series, which started on Thursday, October 24, Team India bowled out New Zealand for just 259 runs in the first innings. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, New Zealand had made a strong start but after that Washington Sundar wreaked havoc and took 7 wickets, destroying New Zealand's innings one by one. Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin also took 3 wickets in his name. Along with this, both these spin-all-rounders coming from Chennai also made a record which had never happened before in Indian cricket. Let's take a look at some such figures-
Sundar-Ashwin created history
Washington Sundar, playing a Test match after more than 3 years, took 7 wickets for 59 runs. In this way, for the first time in Test cricket, he achieved the feat of taking 5 or more wickets in an innings. Before this, Sundar's best was 3/89.
Not only this, Sundar has also given his best performance in first class cricket. Before this, his best performance in first class was 6/87.
Not only this, before this Sundar had taken only 6 wickets in 7 innings of 4 Tests but now he dominated by taking 7 wickets in a single innings.
Sundar took 7 wickets and Ashwin took 3 wickets. In this way, this is the first time in the history of Indian cricket that all 10 wickets in an innings have been taken only by off-spin bowlers.
Overall, for the sixth time in India, all 10 wickets have been taken by spinners on the very first day of a Test match. The last time this happened was in March 2024 against England in Dharamshala.
Sundar bowled 5 batsmen out of these 7 wickets and thus became the 5th bowler of India to do so. Before him, Jasubhai Patel, Bapu Nadkarni, Anil Kumble and Ravindra Jadeja had also done this feat.
