The Blackcaps were comprehensively beaten (2-0) in the recent Test series against Sri Lanka. They put up a brave fight in the first Test and came very close to chasing down 275 before the Sri Lankan spinners applied a stranglehold and they fell short by 63 runs.
The second Test saw a dominant display from the hosts as they steamrolled New Zealand by an innings and 154 runs. The Blackcaps were made to follow on after they got bundled out for just 89 in the first innings. Left-arm orthodox spinner Prabath Jayasuriya was the star of the series as he claimed 18 wickets and finished as the leading wicket-taker of the series.
