Indian senior spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has set a minimum price tag for teams interested in landing T20 World Cup winning skipper Rohit Sharma at the upcoming IPL 2025 Mega Auction.
Five-time IPL winning captain Rohit could reportedly end his over a decade-long stay at the Mumbai Indians and enter the auction for the third time in his 17-year long Indian Premier League career. The 37-year-old was removed as captain by MI last season, with the franchise handing over the leadership duties to Hardik Pandya, who was traded from Gujarat Titans (GT) on the retention deadline day last year. Reports suggested Rohit was unhappy with what transpired and could be looking to move elsewhere next season. All 10 IPL teams can retain up to six players ahead of the mega auction, scheduled to be held next month. However, there is no clarity on whether Rohit will remain in Mumbai Indians come the deadline on October 31, or if the six-time IPL winner will indeed enter the auction for the first time after 13 years, making many franchises interested in his signature. Rohit has been part of IPL auctions in 2008 and 2011, when he fetched bids worth $700,000 from now defunct Deccan Chargers, and $2 Million US Dollars from Mumbai Indians. At the Chargers he won one title as a player, and at MI, Rohit captained the team to 5 titles. If Rohit were to be available in the auction, multiple franchises will be interested in getting the Indian veteran on board, including the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). If any of those teams are keen, Ashwin has revealed how much money they would need to keep aside. The off-spinner suggested the price when a fan expressed his excitement over the possibility of having Virat Kohli and Rohit in the same team. Reacting to the fan's wish on his recently launched hindi version YouTube Channel, Ashwin said that RCB would have to keep at least Rs 20 crore aside for Rohit at the auction table. "Agar Rohit Sharma ke liye aap jaa rahe hai to 20 crore rakhna padega (You need to keep 20 crores with yourself if you want to sign up Rohit Sharma)," Ashwin said during a discussion on his YouTube channel. Will Rohit Sharma enter the IPL 2025 Mega Auction? While earlier reports suggested Rohit may move on from MI after losing his captaincy, recent gossip hints at the Mumbai Indians possibly retaining their most successful captain ahead of the mega auction. Rohit is likely to be one of the six retentions for Mumbai Indians along with Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma as well as one of the uncapped players in Anshul Kamboj, Nehal Wadehara or Naman Dhir. Suryakumar and Bumrah could be the Rs 18 Crore retentions, while Hardik and Rohit could be retained at Rs 14 Crore each with Tilak being retained at Rs 11 Crore. Whatever the order, MI will be keen on retaining their Indian core, including Rohit. The Mumbai Indians could also take a call on captaincy in the coming days as they have showed signs of going back by reappointing Mahela Jayawardene as the head coach for the upcoming season.
