New Zealand's right-arm pacer Ben Sears has been ruled out of the upcoming three-Test series against India due to a knee injury. The series, which begins on Wednesday in Bengaluru, was already a critical challenge for the Kiwis, and the loss of Sears adds to their woes
Especially with former captain Kane Williamson also unlikely to play the first Test. Sears had been delayed in joining the team after experiencing discomfort in his left knee during New Zealand's recent Test series in Sri Lanka. Scans conducted in New Zealand revealed a tear in his meniscus, prompting the medical team to explore options for treatment. Despite hopes that Sears could recover in time, medical advice ultimately led to the decision to withdraw him from the tour. "However, following the medical advice, the decision was made to rule him out of the series. A plan on the best course of treatment and rehabilitation for the injury will be advised in due course," New Zealand Cricket said in a statement. Sears made his Test debut in March this year against Australia and showed promise by picking up five wickets in his lone appearance. Head coach Gary Stead expressed disappointment at losing the 25-year-old fast bowler. "We're obviously disappointed for Ben, who made a strong start to his Test career during the home summer and offers a genuine pace option," Stead said. Jacob Duffy, an uncapped 30-year-old fast bowler, has been called up as Sears' replacement and is expected to depart for India on Wednesday. Duffy has played six ODIs and 14 T20Is for New Zealand and has garnered significant first-class experience, claiming 299 wickets in 102 matches. His recent stint with Nottinghamshire in the County Championship has further solidified his readiness for the challenge ahead. New Zealand's fast-bowling attack for the series now rests on veterans Tim Southee and Matt Henry, with Will O'Rourke and allrounders like Daryl Mitchell providing backup. As the team prepares for the series opener in Bengaluru, they will be hoping Duffy can make a significant impact, filling the void left by Sears' absence.
