The team is very likely to bring in action Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Akash Deep in the opening Test, continuing the same approach which saw them winning the Bangladesh Test series.
And now that the team is also gearing up for the important Border Gavaskar Trophy for which it will be touring Australia, fast bowling will be pivotal down under. It isn’t just the case of staying with the dominant combination but the conditions at the Chinnaswamy that might force the Indian outfit to opt for three pacers. The pitch is full of grass and the weather conditions remain overcast. However, Gambhir said no final decision has been made yet, and kept the cards close to his chest.
“It (combination) depends on conditions, wicket, and opposition. The best part about this dressing room is that we’ve got so many high-quality players and we can select any of them. We know they can do the job for us. That is what is called depth. We’ll have a look at the wicket tomorrow. We’ll have a chat and see what is the best combination to do the job at the Chinnaswamy Stadium,” Gambhir addressed the media on Monday.
Any chance for the spinners?
Despite Chinnaswamy showcasing the pace-friendly characteristics, Gambhir and skipper Rohit Sharma might also consider including additional spinners. New Zealand were quite vulnerable to spin during their recently concluded Test series against Sri Lanka as they lost a total of 37 wickets in two Tests. This shows that the Kiwis are struggling against spin which might see India exploiting the vulnerability.
It might be a tussle between left-arm spinner Axar Patel and wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav who would fight for a place alongside complement Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja if India indeed go for an extra spinner. “Obviously, we’ve got a lot of quality, not only Kuldeep Yadav, but we’ve got a lot of other quality bowlers in the squad. We only select the playing XI who can do the job for us,” Gambhir outlined.
