Baroda kicked off their Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season by stunning the defending champions Mumbai by 84 runs in the opening round on October 14. Bhargav Bhatt was the star of the show for Baroda as he picked up 6 wickets to end up with a 10-wicket haul in the game.
Mumbai were given a target of 262 runs to chase by Baroda at the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium. Mumbai had ended Day 3 on 42/2 after losing Prithvi Shaw and Hardik Tamore. Bhatt would wreck the run chase by picking up the key wickets of Ajinkya Rahane and Ayush Mhatre.  would join up with Siddhesh Lad to get the Mumbai innings back on track. The duo put on 41 runs before Bhatt returned to haunt the defending champions once again. The Baroda spinner got the big wicket of Shreyas for 30 runs, and it would cut open the game for the hosts in the end. Bhatt would then get the wickets of the experienced Shams Mulani and Shardul Thakur as the tail of the Mumbai batting order was exposed. Lad continued to put in a valiant effort with the match heading towards a close finish in the end. The Mumbai batter had scored 59 off 94 balls to keep the defending champions for the win as the morning session of Day 4 was extended with the hope of a result. However, Lad didn't get any support from the other end as Tanush Kotian and Mohit Avasthi failed to make an impression.
