With the IPL retention deadline approaching closer and some tough decisions to make, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will be a relieved franchise after Team India's selection call for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand.
The men's selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar on Friday (October 11) picked India's 15-member squad for the three-Tests against New Zealand, scheduled to start on Wednesday (October 16) in Bengaluru. The selection committee's decision to delay one pacer's international debut by not picking him in the squad may now benefit his IPL team in making one of their retentions. Yash Dayal was the only omission from the squad that beat Bangladesh last month. The decision to not include Dayal even as a travelling reserve with the Indian squad will definitely help RCB, who had bought the pacer for Rs 5 Crore, to retain his services ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. An uncapped retention will cost the team Rs 4 Crore from their budget, but the player has to agree to be retained. Dayal, who performed well, bouncing back from being hit for five sixes by Rinku Singh, is definitely one of the prime candidates for retention. RCB is likely to retain two or three capped and probably one or two uncapped players before heading into the auction, where they may use RTM card to fill up their slots of six retentions. Dayal remaining uncapped before the October 31st deadline, gives them a good option. But it all depends on Dayal's approval on if he wants to be retained at a price lower than what RCB paid for him just under a year ago in the IPL 2024 mini auction. He has since been in the reckoning of the national team, but is yet to make his debut for India. RCB would be keen to hold on to Dayal as the pacer would go for an even bigger amount at the auction after his performance in IPL 2024. In 14 matches, Dayal claimed 15 wickets at an economy rate of 9.15, his best in three seasons of IPL. Many would have written off Dayal after Rinku's onslaught in 2023. RCB, however, gave him a chance and the left-arm pacer made the most of his opportunity, bowling alongside Mohammed Siraj and other pacers in the RCB bowling attack. While convincing Dayal will be the team's focus, RCB also has the option of Anuj Rawat and Vyshak Vijaykumar as uncapped retentions. But the duo could be bought back at the auction for something lower than Rs 4 Crore as their base price will be just Rs 20 Lakh. RCB will definitely retain star batter and icon Virat Kohli in the highest slab of Rs 18 Crore, but the remaining retentions will be a cautious call due to the price slabs for retentions. Rajat Patidar and Siraj could be the other two capped retentions. Will Jacks, Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green and Faf Du Plessis will be the other players who will be up for discussion in the RCB camp in the next few weeks as the player retention could soon get clearer even days before the deadline.
