Before the IPL 2025 mega auction, there has been a major reshuffle in the league's most successful team Mumbai Indians. The franchise has fired its head coach Mark Boucher. In place of Boucher, former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene has once again returned as the head coach. Mumbai Indians announced Jayawardene's return on Sunday 13th October. Jayawardene was earlier the head coach of Mumbai Indians for 6 consecutive seasons from 2017 to 2022, but for the last two seasons, he was playing the role of Global Head of Cricket of the franchise.

Mumbai had handed over the command of the team to South African veteran Mark Boucher before the 2023 season, but the team's performance during his tenure was very poor. Especially in the last season, the controversy that arose after the return of Hardik Pandya and the removal of Rohit Sharma from the captaincy kept the franchise in the headlines throughout the season. The result of the team's continuous poor performance on the field was that the team stood last in the points table. Since then, there was an atmosphere against Boucher and Hardik among the fans of Mumbai Indians.

Now, Mumbai have again turned to their experienced coach Mahela Jayawardene, who has been managing the expansion and management of the MI franchise in various T20 leagues across the world for the last two seasons, including the ILT20, SA20 and MLC. Franchise teams of Indians are included. Jayawardene had earlier been the head coach of Mumbai Indians in IPL from 2017 to 2022 seasons. During this period, he played an important role in making the team IPL champion three times, in 2017, 2019 and 2020.
