India's tour of Australia later this year would not be easy, former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has reckoned. Explaining his comment, the cricketer-turned-commentator said senior batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are not in their prime.
Manjrekar added that youngsters like Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal will have to step up and take the onus upon themselves. The 59-year-old also stated that Rishabh Pant was the only Indian batter in his prime. "It might be a tough one. Virat and Rohit, both are not in their prime, they are not at the peak of their powers to be fair and others like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill have to rise to the occasion. Rishabh Pant is the only one that I feel is in his prime and a very important player," Sanjay Manjrekar, who played 37 Test matches for India, said while speaking on SportifyWithPRG. India are chasing their third consecutive Test series win in Australia. The Asia giants have not lost a Test series against Australia since early 2015. Rohit Sharma would be leading India in a Test series in Australia for the first time. Virat Kohli. who will be celebrating his 36th birthday in November, led India to first-ever Test series win in Australia in 2018-19, and then Ajinkya Rahane led the team in his absence to a 2-1 win 2020-21. 37-year-old Rohit Sharma would be hoping to become the third Indian captain to achieve the feat. However, Manjrekar also backed the Indian team by calling them 'sorted' and pointing out that Australia aren't the same feared team they were in the past. "India is sorted. As for the Australians, the aura and ability they had in the past, where every game they played, they were like champions, is not there anymore," he said.
