The Indian cricket team is likely to face a challenging situation in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024 as captain Rohit Sharma might skip the first or the second Test against Australia next month. India will play five Tests down under as they aim to beat Australia for the third consecutive time in the overseas series.

According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), the Indian captain could miss the first or the second Test. He has already informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about his decision to opt out of the red-ball game.

“There is no clarity about the reason, but it has to do something with his personal life. He might have to miss one of the Tests at the start of the series,” a BCCI source told PTI on the conditions of anonymity.

“If by any chance the personal matter is resolved before India leaves for Australia, he might be a part of five Tests. We will get the final picture in the coming days,” the source added.

He recently led India to a 2-0 win over Bangladesh and will also captain the team in the three-match Test series against New Zealand. He has been a top performer for India since opening the batting in Test cricket, and his attacking brand of cricket is bringing success to the team.

In the Kanpur Test against Bangladesh, Rohit’s cameo inspired the other batters to bat aggressively, and the team won the match despite losing more than two days to rain and the wet outfield.

His reported absence could impact India’s chances of winning another series against the Pat Cummins-led team.
