India fetched a morale-boosting win against Sri Lanka in their group match of the Women's T20 World Cup 2024. On Wednesday, October 9, Harmanpreet Kaur and Co. won by 82 runs at the Dubai International Stadium and moved to second in the points table.
They also improved their net run rate to +0.560 from -1.217, strengthening their chances of advancing to the semi-finals. India also recorded their biggest win by margin of runs in the history of the T20 World Cup. Their previous biggest win was against Bangladesh by 79 runs back in 2014 in Sylhet. With their defeat, Sri Lanka became the second team after Kathryn Bryce's Scotland to be officially knocked out of the competition. New Zealand, in the meantime, would be under pressure as they slipped to fourth in the table with a net run rate of -0.050. As far as India are concerned, their last and final league game is against defending champions Australia, who have won both their matches.
Bowlers strangle Sri Lanka Chasing the big score, Sri Lanka found themselves in all sorts of trouble after being reduced to 28 for three in the powerplay. Athapaththu's disastrous run of form continued after Shreyanka Patil dismissed her for one. Renuka Singh got rid of two of their prolific run-scorers, Vishmi Gunaratne and Harshitha Samarawickrama. Kavisha Dilhari and Anushka Sanjeewani put on 37 runs for the fourth wicket, but it was only to mitigate the damage. Arundhati Reddy carried her good form, picking up three wickets and finished with figures of 4-0-19-3. With seven wickets, she is also India's leading wicket-taker in the ongoing tournament. Leg-spinner Asha Sobhana put the brakes in the middle overs, picking the wickets of Sanjeewani, Sugandika Kumari and Inoshi Priyadarshini, and finishing with impressive figures of 4-0-19-3.
