Shakib was earlier accused of murder after Rafiqul Islam, whose son Rubel passed away in the protests, filed a case against him back in August. Calls to withdraw Shakib from Bangladesh's Test squad against Pakistan were also made.
Earlier, Shakib said that he wished to play his last and final Test at home when Bangladesh face South Africa in Mirpur. But the 37-year-old also said that he would need security clearance to return to his country for his farewell Test. Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, the Youth and Sports Advisor, had stated that Shakib must first clarify his stance before requesting security.
'I would have felt the same way'
"At first, I respectfully remember all the students who sacrificed their lives or were injured while leading the anti-discrimination student movement. I offer my deepest respect and condolences to them and their families. Although no sacrifice can ever fully compensate for the loss of loved ones, the pain of losing a child or a brother is irreplaceable," Shakib wrote in a post on Facebook.
"For those of you who felt hurt or disappointed by my silence during this critical time, I sincerely apologise acknowledging your feelings. If I were in your position, perhaps I would have felt the same way," Shakib said.
Shakib, who has also retired from T20Is, also asked his fans to lend him support when she plays his farewell Test in front of his home crowd.
"As you know, I will soon be playing my final match. In my final match, in the closing chapter of this story, I want you all by my side. I want to bid farewell with all of you standing with me. I hope, and I don't just hope, I believe that in this final moment, you all will stand with me. You all will be there to close the story, a story where the true heroes are not me, but all of you," Shakib added.
Shakib recently played in the Test series against India where he struggled both with bat and ball. He also had trouble with his vision due to which he was seen biting a strap inside his helmet during the Chennai Test. Shakib is currently playing for Los Angeles Waves in the NCL USA T10 League.
