Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson has played down the absence of Cheteshwar Pujara while talking up India's chances of winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia for the third successive time.
Watson highlighted that Pujara played a crucial role in India's historic series triumphs in 2018-18 and 2020-21, but said India have the option of going with a more aggressive option at No. 3 and putting more pressure on the Australian bowling attack. Cheteshwar Pujara is unlikely to be part of India's squad for the Australia tour despite his past heroics Down Under. The senior batter, with experience of 103 Tests, has not been in the mix of the Test squad, having last played for India in whites in the World Test Championship final in June 2023. Pujara was a pillar at No. 3 for India in overseas Tests, scoring 2999 runs at an average of 38.44. He hit 8 hundreds in overseas conditions with three of them coming against Australia in Australia. . In his place, India have played Shubman Gill and the youngster has managed to make the No. 3 spot his own. Shubman Gill has played 12 Tests and scored 782 runs at No. 3, scoring 3 hundreds and two fifties. However, Gill's overseas numbers at the No. 3 spot are far from impressive -- 119 runs in four Tests at an average of 19 per innings. "When you talk about Pujara is (that) he just doesn't make a mistake. Whereas you've seen so many of these incredible batters for India, top-order batters like (Yashasvi) Jaiswal, he has scored runs very quickly, but he hasn't made a mistake," Shane Watson said, as quoted by PTI news agency. "He hasn't really given the opposition a chance to be able to get him out. If those types of batters do come out to Australia and play aggressively, put the bad balls away and put the pressure on the Aussie bowlers, then they can still have the same effect and they keep the game moving as well," he added. "With the calibre of batters that India have got and the skill they've got, there's no reason why they can't combine that, putting pressure on the bowlers, score quickly but also not make mistakes," he said. Pujara's gutsy approach and his ability to bat for long periods were crucial in wearing down the Australian attack in the last two tours. Shubman Gill, in fact, made his debut for India in Tests during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy of 2021, scoring two fifties in three Tests, including the famous 91 in the Gabba Test. As Watson pointed out, young Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has made a dream start to his Test career, has been backed by several former cricketers to find success in his maiden Test tour of Australia. AUSTRALIA NEED TO BE AT THEIR VERY BEST: WATSON Watson said Australia will be under pressure and that the hosts need to be at their best to test the touring Indian side, led by Rohit Sharma. "India have certainly got the team that has got the firepower, give Australia a huge challenge at home. The last time that they met in Australia, India played very, very well. They will have their confidence from that last tour," Watson said. "But just knowing the firepower that India do have with the bat and the ball and how they continue to come together, Australia are going to have to be at their very, very best to be able to win that series," he added. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy will get underway from November 22 at Perth Stadium. For the first time in 33 years, India and Australia will compete in the five-Test series.
