New Delhi: Long before the cricket fans quench their thirst for entertainment with T20 cricket, there was a six-a-side tournament called Hong Kong International Cricket Sixes which provided the stage for slam-bang cricket action.
Launched in 1992, the tournament organised by Cricket Hong Kong Cricket will return after a 7-year hiatus after halting in 2017. The once-popular Hong Kong Cricket Sixes will return after a seven-year break and will host 12 teams between November 1 to 3, including India who will make their first appearance since 2012. Australia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, England, hosts Hong Kong, Nepal, New Zealand, Oman, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates are the other nations to participate in the upcoming edition. The Hong Kong Cricket Sixes has witnessed some iconic cricketers in action, including Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, Shane Warne, Wasim Akram, Shoaib Malik, Sanath Jayasuriya and MS Dhoni. When MS Dhoni displayed his six-hitting prowess before his international debut In the 2004 edition, the Indian team, captained by off-spinner Nikhil Chopra, featured a host of international cricketers and an uncapped MS Dhoni, who was not given the responsibility of the keeping duties as Pravin Amre donned the wicketkeeping gloves. Dhoni, then 23, opened the batting for India in all five games during a horrendous campaign where they tasted defeats in all matches. Dhoni, though showed glimpses of his hitting brilliance, in all pool games as India slumped to disappointing losses against the UAE, Pakistan, South Africa and hosts Hong Kong. Dhoni saved his best for the last in a near-dead rubber third-place Playoff match against South Africa. Dhoni hammered five sixes and a four, and bound by the tournament rules, retired out on 36 off eight deliveries. While India lost the match by 4 wickets, Dhoni was the only one to pick a wicket, castling Johan Wan der Wath. Dhoni was India's highest run-getter and third-highest overall in the tournament with 112 runs. He would make his international debut a month later, on December 23, 2004, against Bangladesh in Chattogram.
