Rohit Sharma’s childhood coach Dinesh Lad opened up on the star batter’s retirement from Test cricket and one-day internationals. The 37-year-old bid adieu to T20Is after winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the United States of America.

He is still leading the Men in Blue in red-ball cricket and ODIs.

Dinesh Lad said that Rohit could retire from Test cricket after the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final, for which the sub-continent team is in pole position to qualify.

“I am not saying that he will quit the Test format after the final of the World Test Championship. However, there is a possibility of him saying goodbye to this format because of his growing age. It seems that he may announce retirement from Tests,” Dinesh told Dainik Jagran.

Another question is on Rohit’s presence in the ICC ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. India lost to Australia in the final of the 2023 ODI Global tournament. The right-handed batter will be 40 when India land in the African continent for the mega event. If Rohit is selected, he will become the oldest India National Cricket Team player to play an ODI match in history.

Dinesh is confident that Rohit will don the Indian jersey. “He could leave Test cricket to stay fit for the fifty-over format. I am sure that Rohit will play the 2027 ODI World Cup. He is playing well at the moment,” he added.

Rohit wants to win the ODI World Cup. He was not picked in the title winning campaign in 2011. He was part of the team in 2015 and 2019 but India lost in the semi-finals.

Rohit holds the landmark for the most hundreds in a single edition of the ODI World Cup with 5 centuries in 2019. He is also the fourth-highest run-getter in the history of the tournament with 1575 runs in 28 games at 60.57 with seven tons.
