India pacer Sandeep Sharma recently shared how Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson played a pivotal role in reviving his Indian Premier League (IPL) career.
Speaking on a podcast with Taruwar Kohli, Sandeep revealed that after going unsold in the IPL 2023 auction, it was Samson's intervention that provided him with another opportunity. Sandeep explained that despite being a consistent performer in previous IPL seasons, he was left without a team following the auction. However, Samson ensured Sandeep was picked by Rajasthan Royals as a replacement for the injured Prasidh Krishna. This move marked a significant turnaround in Sandeep's career, allowing him to re-establish himself in the competitive IPL environment. "I got a call from Sanju (Samson), he talked to me. He told me a lot of positive things. He explained how me going unsold also made him feel bad personally. He believed in me and told me that I would get a chance that season (IPL 2023). He told me how there were injury problems in every team and even in RR. He told me that in that season I would play IPL and will do well," Sandeep said.
"He was the only guy who made me feel positive during that time, which actually helped me a lot. He was the only one who talked in the present. He then called me to the RR camp, and then I got in because Prasidh, unfortunately, got injured. Since then, I have been playing every game as my last and enjoy it all," Sandeep added. Sandeep's IPL career Sandeep has had a successful IPL career, particularly during his time with Punjab Kings from 2013 to 2018. During those six seasons, he took 71 wickets in 56 matches, establishing himself as a reliable bowler, especially with the new ball. He continued his form with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), where he claimed 43 wickets in 48 matches.
However, it was the opportunity provided by Samson and the Rajasthan Royals that gave Sandeep a second wind. Since joining RR in 2023, he has become one of their key bowlers. Across the IPL 2023 and 2024 seasons, Sandeep picked up 23 wickets in 22 matches. His consistent performances kept him in the race for the prestigious Purple Cap, awarded to the highest wicket-taker of the tournament. Sandeep's resurgence is a testament to both his skill and the faith placed in him by Samson and the Rajasthan Royals management. It highlights the importance of trust and opportunity in professional cricket, as well as the impact a supportive captain can have on a player's career.
