The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced fresh guidelines ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Each franchise is now permitted to retain a maximum of six players.
This can be achieved through direct retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) option. Additionally, teams are allowed to keep up to two uncapped players under these new rules. Franchises have the chance to maintain up to six players from their existing squads. They can also use one RTM card during the auction process. This strategy allows teams to preserve their core group before the auction, though it comes with a considerable financial impact. IPL 2025 Auction Purse and Retention Costs The upcoming mega auction will feature an increased budget of Rs 120 crore for each team. However, if a franchise opts to retain five players, they must allocate Rs 75 crore from their budget. This decision requires careful financial planning by each team. These changes aim to balance team stability with competitive fairness. By allowing retention, franchises can build continuity within their squads while still participating actively in the auction process. As franchises prepare for IPL 2025, strategic decisions regarding player retention will play a crucial role in shaping team dynamics. Although many teams will be aiming to retain maximum number of players from their previous roster, there are a couple of teams who may be inclined to retain none and arrive at the auction with a full purse of Rs 120 crore. Punjab Kings Punjab Kings were vocal against any retention during the owners' meeting earlier this year. And they may well be sticking with their principle ahead of the auction. After disastrous performance last season, the Kings management will be inclined to retain no one of their current roster, and probably look to rebuild their team completely for the next cycle of the IPL. Although they have a few uncapped Indian players who can pack a punch, they may make an investment of the mere Rs 4 crore (required to retain an uncapped player) ahead of the auction. Lucknow Super Giants Lucknow Super Giants is another franchise who may not have a lot of retentions in mind. Amid the doubts on their captain KL Rahul, LSG may contain themselves with a minimalistic approach in the retention list. Someone like Mayank Yadav is likely to be retained but that will mean they will have to pay at least Rs 11 crore as the pacer may make his India debut ahead of the retention deadline. Hence they will have to strategize keeping various things in mind before announcing the retention names.
