New Delhi: Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin is of the opinion that many of the IPL teams won't be in a formidable position to make five retentions ahead of the IPL 2024 auctions this year.
The IPL governing council last week permitted each of the 10 IPL teams to make a maximum of six retentions, including the right-to-match (RTM) cards. A maximum of five capped players and not more than two uncapped players can be retained by a team. While sharing his views on social media platform X, a verified user by the name of Vignesh commented on Ashwin's post: 'IPL retention rule is a complete Joke.. With 5 retentions and 1 RTM what's the purpose of Mega Auction?? Every team will retain the core team and there will be no big changes in the team's squad.' Ashwin, who has played 211 IPL matches for five teams in 15 seasons, believes that the team won't have a easy time to retain even five of the six permissible players. 'It's not that straight forward, don't think many teams will be able to retain 5,' Ashwin responded to Vignesh's comments.
What is the cost to retain players? The retention rules for IPL 2025 have a twist this time around. A team can retain its first choice player for INR 18 crore. The second choice player should be offered INR 14 crore and the third with INR 11 crore. However, if a fourth capped player is retained then the team will again have to shell out INR 18 crore. Similarly, INR 14 crore for the fifth capped player. Retain Player 1: INR 18 crore Retain Player 2: INR 14 crore Retain Player 3: INR 11 crore Retain Player 4: INR 18 crore Retain Player 5: INR 14 crore An uncapped player can be retained for INR 4 crore only. The new uncapped player rule will allow teams to retain a player who hasn't played international cricket in last five years or isn't part of central contract list under the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
