The Indian women's cricket team suffered a mammoth stumbling block in their T20 Women's World Cup opener against New Zealand on Friday (October 4).
  Harmanpreet Kaur and her troops were humbled at the hands of the Black Caps in Dubai, suffering a 58-run defeat. Chasing a target of 161 runs, the Indian team got bowled out for just 102 runs. With the defeat, India currently sit at the bottom of their group after the first match. In the T20 World Cup, only two teams will qualify for the semifinals from each group, meaning, it will be a daunting task now for the women's team to progress to the knockout stages. India can reach to a maximum of six points at the end of their group stages. The Indian team have three matches more in the group stages - against Pakistan (Oct 6), vs Sri Lanka (Oct 9) and then the final match against reigning champions Australia (Oct 13). After the New Zealand defeat, India's current Net Run Rate (NRR) is -2.900, which means they will have to win by some big margins in their next matches. But despite winning three matches, India can still exit if their NRR is inferior to the other teams with the same number of points.
