As the Indian women's cricket team gears up for the T20 World Cup 2024 in the UAE, former captain Anjum Chopra has reckoned that it was important for Harmanpreet Kaur's team to lift an ICC World Cup trophy.
In an exclusive chat with MyKhel, Anjum was asked if India Women should end the drought by winning the T20 World Cup and complete a double for India in 2024 after the men's team triumph in the same format earlier this year. Anjum Chopra, who has been one of the key figures in women's cricket in India, reckoned that either the upcoming T20 World Cup or the next ODI world Cup, it was important for the Women in Blue to break the jinx and become the world champions. "I think this world cup, or next in India or next after that, winning the world cup is important for the Indian women's cricket team. I am not gonna take back a step and say we cannot win or say it's difficult," Anjum Chopra told MyKhel. Anjum, who was recently part of the Duleep Trophy 2024 commentary panel, recalled India's heartbreaks in the final of 2005 and 2017 ODI World Cup, saying that the team does not lack skill, and just need to 'cross that huddle'. The former southpaw also talked about India's defeat against Australia in the Women's T20 World Cup 2023. In the match, Harmanpreet Kaur scored a fluent fifty as India looked favourite to beat Australia and qualify for the finals. However, they choked to a five-run defeat after an unlucky run-out dismissal of Harmanpreet. India still had five wickets in hand, and needed 39 off the final five overs, but the lower-middle failed to seize the moment. "I think we should have won the world cup in 2005, and we did not lose that because of lack of skill, it was something else. If we could have won in 2005, then we could have won in 2017 as well. We should have already been world champions. We should have won in 2023 as well. After Harman got out run-a-ball was needed and other batters should have won it," she said. 'We have all the essentials to be a world leader' Further, Anjum Chopra asserted that Harmanpreet Kaur's India Women have all the essentials to become the world champions. Concluding on a positive note, the 47-year-old said India Women will win world cups frequently once they have their 1983 moment like the Indian men's team. "We should definitely be a world champion. We win this one or one after this India, we are still a work-in-progress team, but one thing I can certainly say that we are very close to being as competitive regularly, giving a strong fight to a world champion team. We are not a world champion team but we have all the essentials to be a world leader. "It's like crossing that huddle, it's like taking one step at a time, and consciously taking that one step at a time. It's about how we are beating a Nepal, a South Africa or an England team. It's about how we beat them. It's a work-in-progress team. We have not had a 1983 moment. So once women's cricket gets 1983 moment, we know how it is to win a world cup."
