Ishant Sharma, the 36-year-old Indian fast bowler recently joined the Pace Lab programme under English coach Steffan Jones in Bengaluru's Invictus Performance Lab, and MyKhel had a chance to talk with him for an exclusive interview.
Starting his career in 2007, Sharma experienced many ups and downs in Indian cricket and played a great role in the emergence of India in the Cricket world. The right-arm fast bowler has played 105 test matches and 80 ODIs for India and is also represented in 110 IPL matches. With 311 test wickets, he is one of the greatest bowlers India has ever produced in test cricket. In this conversation, he spoke about many things, including his take on the future of test crickets in this era of the ever-growing popularity of limited-over crickets. Ishant Sharma denied that test cricket is losing ground due to the emergence of t20 leagues like IPL. He said, "I won't say Test cricket has taken a backseat. Because if you say all the top players want to play Test cricket, and the priority is Test cricket. Yes, there's a lot of money in the IPL, that's a temptation." He also added, "As a sports person, if you want to play Test cricket, then you'll be recognized all over the world. If you do well in Australia, if you do well in England, if you do well in the subcontinent. Because there's always a different kind of opportunity, different conditions. So, if you do well in test cricket, I think there's a lot of people you know who will recognize you as a great test bowler or a great test batsman." Hence, according to him, a player must excel in test cricket in all conditions to make a name for himself in the cricketing world. After playing more than 100 test matches for India, Sharma is still focused on improvement on a daily basis rather than his comeback. At the age of 36 years, he is still enjoying cricket and devoting himself to working harder till his body permits. About his comeback, Sharma said, "I'm not thinking about that anymore. I'm just playing cricket. As long as I'm playing cricket, things will fall apart by itself. As soon as you have a goal in mind like you want to make a comeback or this or that, I think you restrict yourself. Till the time I'm loving the game, till the time my body is fine, I can work hard to improve even a little bit every single day."
